I can do chest okay, head i am good sometimes not so good in others, but whistle voice, i cant do it. I try to but all that comes out is air, or i begin to squeak (no control at all!) How do i discover it? Does it just come with time once my range begins to expand?

whistle

Whistle just came to me after a while, though even after a few months (though I have not been practicing it that much) I am still not in complete control - as in I break between high headvoice and whistle - it takes time and experimentation. Don't worry that you don't have it as some materials suggest, everyone has it since it's just another coordination, it just takes time to discover and use well.
I suggest Adam Lopez for impressive use of whistle voice...

Re: whistle

761349,

Your head is ahead of your voice. In your mind you are thinking I should be here, but your voice just isn't there yet.

It takes years of work to get really, really good. Don't get frustrated - it will come in time. You have had SS for less than a week; you need to slow down. Do the exercises and you will start reaping the rewards - they'll come slowly, but your hard work and dedication will pay off.

Slow down! :D

Re: whistle

Thanks guys.

Hey Jake. Since you use Singing Success, im wondering, do you just keep repeating the same lesson over and over again everyday? I do the same lesson over and over again everyday. Im not very good at them yet (especially trilling, which i cant do at all) and i cant breathe properly. So do you breath through your nose or mouth, and how? And how long till you see changes? A few months right?

Re: whistle

Yes, keep going through the same lesson. Whenever you feel you are ready to move on.

I take breaths through my mouth. If you feel like you are dying, you should stop and get your breath back and then resume wherever the CD is at.

Take deep breaths, not fast and shallow. Try that and see how it works.

I'd say a few months, yes.

Keep singing!

Re: whistle

I did have a voice teacher for a little bit (Over a year ago. For a month or two - I only went once a week). I don't think she was that great though.

Singing Success is awesome. I believe that I will be using this program for the next 10 years and more, unless Brett comes out with something better. I heard that he is coming out with a program that will (For lack of a better word) concentrate on improving your mixed voice.

Man, if I keep using this for the next 10 years... Wow. Sounds like fun to me! Hehe.

Re: whistle

Jake, Wow, what results have you gotten from it? From the beginning till now? And how long have you used it?

Also, i didnt get what others said before. When am i ready to move on? Do i have to be able to reach the highest note in the exercise (C above high womens C) for each exercise for it to be considered "complete" and ready to move on? When do i know if im ready to move on? I dont know how much improvement i need before i can move on.

Re: whistle

Well... I'm putting all my time spent doing it together: About 4 - 6 months. I'm not really sure.

I remember that I couldn't sing the first chorus of "You Raise Me Up" when I was taking voice lessons from my teacher. I can almost sing the whole song - recording quality. A month or two of work and I'll be able to do it.

D, E, F, G, and I am moving on to the A and upward to mens high C. That is just solo quality. I can go up to womens high C in head voice and sometimes to the next C above womens.

I have gained a lot. Plus, my voice has grown stronger. Not to brag or anything, but it has grown a lot.

Whoops, I forgot about the last part of your post.

What CD are you currently on?

Re: whistle

Hey Jake,

Im on CD 3 right now, the first lesson.

Im really worried this isnt working for me. But i keep believing and keep using the SInging Success program.

Right now, chest voice, i might be able to hit the mens middle C, or maybe a little higher.

As for head voice, i can go to the B above mens middle C, or sometimes the mens high C.

I cant go any higher. Sometimes when i do Head voice or try to do whistle voice, all that comes out is air, no sound. Is this normal when i am starting?

Also Jake, is there an email or AIM i can contact you at so its easier to communicate? I PMed you but got no reply. Or do you not like communicating that way? thanks.

Re: whistle

Ok. I'd spend two - three weeks on CD 3. Then move on to CD 4 - that CD is good for growth. Spend a couple of months on that.

Yes it is normal. You can't walk into a weight room and try to lift 200 pounds without any training. Training, training, training! It takes work and patience.

I don't use any IM programs. I'd actually prefer that we'd talk here, because I don't know everything and someone might learn something through our discussions.

Keep it up!

Jolly Jake.

Re: whistle

Okay.

Jake, at what point did you feel comfortable with CD 3?

Were you able to hit the highest note for each exercise? (C above womens high C) Ive asked already but im not sure when "comfortable" is. What should result when im done with CD 3? How much improvement should i have?

...

I don't know it was a while ago.

Only you will know. My advice is to preview CD 4 sometime in the next few weeks and ask yourself, am I ready to move on? I would advise doing it anyway, because CD 4 is a good CD for growth.

I can't tell you how much improvement you will make, since I am not there with you or anything like that. If you work hard and do it everyday, there will be improvement.

Re: whistle

761349,

I also will say that you should just keep going through the same lesson for a while. If you practice diligently, while neither straining nor stressing for 6 out of 7 days a week (I think you should get a day of rest each week, personally) for at least 2 weeks so that the excercises become rather easy and relaxed, then you can move on to the next lesson.

Also, I agree with musiciano (though I don't think he's posted here yet) that you shouldn't really care very much how good you sound as you're practicing. When I was doing the nays at first, I wouldn't put enough of a "cry" on it, and I ended up straining and going into falsetto.

So, basically, don't get "stuck" in one lesson, but make sure you practice diligently and for enough time so that your voice and you are ready for the next lesson. :)

Oh, more posts have been adding as I was writing this and going about other things...

As far as hitting the top note (usually it's C above women's high C), I haven't gotten that high yet, and I've practiced with it for some time, so I'd say to just do what's comfortable. Your voice will grow and mature, becoming looser and more agile (or whatever it does). The point is, your voice will improve if you practice with whatever you've got if you're practicing in a good way.

And, keep the wonderful determination! :) ...Just don't get ahead of yourself... ;)

Re: whistle

Well, the cry is basically what's it's named, a cry. Like, the sound a baby makes when it cries. Now, I don't hear babies cry very often, so I can't tell you from first-hand experience that the cry is actually in resemblence of a baby's cry, but Brett has a plenty good demonstration on CD3, I think.

When you do the nays, or any excercise for that matter, make sure to not tense your face or your jaw or any of that, as that will simply develop bad habits and make things harder than they should be. I remember when I was trying to show my Dad how to do the mum excercise (it's on the SS program) with a cry on it, it was like he was trying too hard and trying to make it sound majestic instead of a dopey, crying sound.

Now, I hope I didn't confuse you with a reference to another excercise: The nay excercise doesn't have the dopey sound, just the cry. The cry is sort of like a whine, like the sound some kid might make if he were asked to do a chore, but he gets all, well, whiney about it. Or, maybe I'm the only one who thinks that sometime kids make that noise... Anyway, perhaps someone could post a sound clip for him? ;)

You are supposed to do all of the exercises on the CD.
