Hey guys, I recorded myself doing the "and the rockets red glare" exercises on the cd. Pleaase have a listen and tell me how to improve! image

And the rockets red glare

But I didn't to it along with the cd though, I felt the cd was kinda constraining. I prefer taking my own time to see when I'm ready, and so you can hear me clicking on an online keyboard. I did some nuahs (mums don't work well for me) then sang the line. Starting from E as the high note till A.

Another thing, is it common for mucus to appear after you strain your voice? Before recording this, I was straining my voice a little by bringing the previous exercise too high (the yays). And in the recording, you can hear me constantly clearing my throat.

Ok, please listen

That actually sounds really good. I'm surprised you didn't pull too much when you hit the F# and on. The only thing is that you splat some vowels. On ROCKET, don't go ET as in WET, go IT. The I from IT is very easy to connect and do a solid mix on. Awesome job though.

Oops I splatted the vowels. I was focusing too much on the high notes lol. Red and glare. I'll keep that in mind when I'm singing next time. Thanks

Sounds pretty good. =) You seem to be at roughly the same spot as me. Can you take it higher? If not, perhaps try doing the whole thing lighter, just for experimentation - not necessarily permanently but rather to give you another option. The point with this experiment is to see if you can go higher with it and perhaps do things a bit more freely so you have a good base to eventually add chest to, as your voice allows you to.

If you can go higher already, then great. Hehe. From the recording it sounded like A4 was a big deal to you (and it is a great thing!), so I wasn't sure if you could go higher with it or not. =)

By the way, here's a clip of me, in case maybe it helps you or whatever. It shows me slowly transitioning upwards from C4 one half-step at a time. It's not all completely the sound I eventually want, but it's coming along really well and is smoother and freer than what I've been doing for a while, and I can feel my voice is letting me bring in more chest than I could before. Here it is: Yaa on 3 note descent, from middle C up

Peace,

Ryan

Galatians 3:22 But the Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.

I can take it up to a high C/C#. But then it gets really heady and I can't sustain it comfortably. My gameplan now is to start slow, get the range of notes from E-A down, because I'm in a band, and these notes are really important. Sometimes when you sing, all the technique goes out of the window. And if I don't sing these few note with good technique, I'm sure I'll get hoarse after a few songs. Notes higher than A I could always get away with pure headvoice for now.

I listened to your clip, it sounds like you're using a lot of twang. I don't know but you, but personally, I prefer "thicker" tone. You can try lowering your larynyx a little. But that's just me. image

I wouldn't worry about having to see "rocket" wide though...

because the IPA transcription of rocket is [ˈrɒkɪt]... rhymes with socket [sɒkɪt]

Splatting "red glare" sounds like fun though... but I wouldn't go wide if its an A4 already... maybe if I keyed "red glare" to an F4 .. I can spread and live dangerously. image
