Nate, you are right. Take what I say for what it's worth and only use it when you are ready for it. Until then, it's no use. So yeah, great, I think
that progression of skill chart could not be more accurate. I agree.

I love that progression chart. If I may interject here, Music? If not, I'll remove it. =D This is just my opinion on the singing with/without technique and
the mental blocks associated. Do remember this is the MENTAL side of things, not the physical.
Unconscious Incompetence During this stage you're completely unaware of your "faults" and "shortcomings," and usually DON'T CARE. There are no mental blocks. Straight up enjoyment/annoyance. Lawl. Conscious Incompetence The trouble starts here. This is where MOST people start their journey. They get on the diving board, and jump in the pool and SPLASH into Conscious Incompetence. You get all of these delusions in your mind about how to "fix" the problems you believe you have. Sometimes it's getting a teacher, sometimes buying a system, and sometimes trying to be exactly like someone you idolize. Whatever the method is that your mind throws together, it USUALLY sends you spinning. There will be improvement, howbeit rather slow and crawling. This is where almost everyone who quits decides to get out of the pool and grab their towel so they can go home. The mind goes crazy, and drives YOU crazy. Negative feelings and scattered attempts at SOMETHING come into play too often to even remember. That's the blockade. Conscious Competence This is where the troubles start to disappear. You actually realize you're DECENT. I say that because it evidently still matters to you at this point if others say you are "good" or not. However, you're BEGINNING to realize that your mind is a mess, and you're actively starting to straighten it out. All of the "junk mail" gets tossed aside. You take your shoes off and feel at home with your voice. You still work on singing "right" but you do so more easily because the baggage is gone. You're focusing on letting go, not demanding. Unconscious Competence Herein lies the finale. Not only do you sing "well," but more importantly you don't CARE if you sing well. You just sing. You realize what is important, and that's to feel the music. You let the voice do what it needs to do in order to transmit the message. By this point, you're not "singing with technique." You are singing without it, because it just doesn't matter! You just open your mouth and pour out your heart! This can also be applied to just about ANYTHING. |

I absolutely love this. It's reassuring to know all the strange feelings you are going through are actually a well worn path. It's nice to get a peek
at the future also.

yap, JollyJake, I totally agreed with your view point. The singing techniques can be broken down to various area. And you have to improve every area to totally
improve your singing skill.

I've finally made the transition from "conscious competence" to "unconscious competence," and it is the most amazing feeling ever!
Everything musiciano wrote makes so much more sense now! For a while now, I've been a very competent and growingly consistent singer, but
I still felt the need to analyze everything I did, everything I heard, and consciously tell myself, "You need more twang. You need more support. Is that
the right vowel?" Don't get me wrong: those can be helpful thoughts while training, and I am very indebted to some of the methodologies that have
influenced me (SS, CVT) and helped me make vocal breakthroughs. BUT I'm finally at the point where I am relinquishing control and
not caring about the nitty gritty details anymore (at least not consciously). I don't think about which mode I'm singing in at any moment
anymore, and I don't particularly care. And it's liberating! Because my artistry has grown tremendously even in the past few days because I just let my
emotion guide my singing and not some focus on technique, and doing so has drawn out more subtle colors of my voice (ones that I used to avoid), and really, I
have to say that my singing is better than ever!
It's weird. I really did just wake up one day (this past Sunday!) and realize that I didn't need to micromanage everything in my singing anymore; I just need to communicate something real. I'm really learning to trust my body. I realized that my body knows what sound I want! I don't have to trick it into going into a chest-dominant/more metallic mode; I think my body has come to realize, "Oh, when she braces herself for a note this way, this is the sound she wants," and that sound comes out. My high notes are effortless, powerful, and free; I can sing every song that comes my way. It's amazing. It definitely took a while, and I think it does tie into "conditioning." For me, anyway, I had to consciously learn all these coordinations first and practice them in order to condition myself to where I am now, but now that that phase has passed, I finally understand what it means to not think at all when singing. Wow. It's great!

Unspoken,
Great to hear that you are now in a place where you feel free. We can all thank our muscle memory for that! It's just like learning to ride a bike - first we consciously have to know what to do - and in the end we just ride the bike without thinking about it. I just aslo want to add, that these nitty gritty things must NOT be forgotten! Cause every now and then we will face a new singing challenge and then our "toolbox" become very handy! For instance I often make use of these "tools" since I play in various musicals and therefore have to change the way I sound to fit the different roles.
