I have to thank Josh becasue it was something he pointed out to me in a scale I sent him. I was letting go of chest as I ascended in the scales.

I pondered this for awhile. I knew what he meant but I couldnt 'feel' how to do it any differently. At the same time I was really struggling with a chorus in a song I'm doing with my guitar duo. Coming out of the verse into this chorus which goes a bit higher I would just literally lose it.

Then I realised what I was doing - it was the same thing. I was going VERSE VERSE - let go of chest completely - then trying to find CHORUS CHORUS... But once you let go of the co-ordination you're in its extremely difficult to get it back in time for the next line and this was tripping me up time every time I did it.

Have been paying attention to this and found other places where I was doing it since and not realising what I was doing. Just wanted to share this with others who are still feeling their way.

Singing high isnt about changing from chest to head at some arbitary point its all about maintaining chest and bringing head into what you already have.

Re: Interesting fault found - letting go of chest

You're totally right. You keep the chest but then bring the head/falsetto coordination in with it as you ascend. I had the same problem, too, by the way. I wasn't keeping the chest as I ascended. I've gotten a lot better, though. Dante and Joshie have helped me with it.

Re: Interesting fault found - letting go of chest

I think this was one of my main problems, as I see it. I found it so incredibly hard to find that I was "let go." I mean, yeah, when I was talking, I wasn't like that. It wasn't airy, and was converting the air to sound energy properly. Shoot, I could yell and not have that problem. (On occasion I could/can scream like that, but I don't know how to do it yet.) When it came to singing, the switch just flipped, I guess.

You've gotta know what causes it so you can try to fix it. You already know what sound you want, so just go for it. Learn to feel.

By the way, I'm settled into my apartment, have cable internet and a mic. I can start helping out more with people and clips and stuff if it's desired. I got home about 5pm EST. Needless to say, I'm married so I won't devote all of my time to it, but it's still a passion and I'm willing, if it is desired of me.

BEST OF WISHES!

Re: Interesting fault found - letting go of chest

LOL mmm interesting thread. Just recently I did a bit of recording and noticed I dropped out heaps of chest when singing past G4ish. Now I'm working hard to correct this too.

Re: Interesting fault found - letting go of chest

You guys are all figuring this out and you are very right. "letting go" of chest voice as you ascend into mix can be the very reason that you don't have that "thick and full" sound you are looking for. finding the right balance of keeping the chest while allowing the narrow vowel and adding head voice mixture to balance your tones starting at E4-F#4 is the KEY to the big sounding mix everyone wants.

I think most of you would be surprised at how much you can lean in to the thick chesty sound without damaging yourself.

I plan on posting a video demonstration lesson of this concept soon along with many others. Also I'm considering designing a vocal program to pick up where singing success leaves off and help people "master the mix" and by that I mean the FULL bone-chilling, window shattering, heart pounding voice that we all want when we go above middle C.

Nice to hear your views on this, Jesse. I am in agreement with you said, especially the part I quoted. BTW, did you ever get my message I left?

Re: Interesting fault found - letting go of chest

If you ever make that, let me know. I'd definately like to have it. =P

The part that Dante quoted, was why I didn't ever try it. I was so afraid (because I was always told I had a really small, and light voice) that I WOULD hurt my voice by singing so full-out. I love it. ^^
