Hey I asked this question a while back (no one answered it), but how exactly do I deal with staying on pitch? That's one thing I wish I could do better.

Re: Intonation

You will have to train your ear for that. Play notes on your guitar and start singing them on pitch. With song you will just have to learn the notes and recall them when singing.

Intonation isn't singing on pitch.

Re: Intonation

Mark Baxter says that most of it is due to tension.

He says that if you're singing sharp that you need to be careful about a tense lower body.

If you are going flat, then it is probably because of tongue and neck tension. In the studio, it is usually caused by abdominal tenesion.

Dante, Musiciano. Do you agree with this?

Re: Intonation

I'll agree tension plays a role. Your ears play a HUGE role though. It's extremely hard to sing perfectly in tune with any instrument for a variety of reasons.

Can you just hit a pitch if you have one note to reference though? I mean, only the melody to follow, and something simple. Can you stay on pitch then?

I mean I can stay on key, hitting the notes is no problem, I just have that problem of going flat, or hitting some notes flat. Actually though sometimes, I have a bad habit of sliding up to notes, instead of diliniating (sp) and hitting them right on. But its the flatness that really bothers me.

But, do you have this tendency to go flat like that if it's just a tone... and you match it. Nothing else but that one tone.

You will have to keep a constant airflow, if you use your air incorrectly you confuse the muscles. This will come with practicing songs more often and recording them while your singing. You need to get familiar with your voice to use it the way you want to.

Re: ...

Mark also says that (This I agree 100% with) you when you are singing live, you always won't be able to hear your voice over the band - some singers have a dependency on hearing their own voice to stay on pitch - so the moment they can't, they go off pitch.

Mark says that you should know the pitch by how it feels - your body knows how to produce the pitch, you just need to know as a singer that you are hitting that B-flat and you know what is coming out, even though you can't hear yourself.

Mhmm.... but the feeling for that Bb won't differ too much from the B nor the A. It takes a lot to feel that way. Actually, it nears Absolute Pitch.

I agree, when you can't hear yourself, you fall out. That's why you use monitors. If you have an earpiece monitor, it's well worth it. They put you in your ear without any interference of the band drowning out anything. You hear it well.

I was asking about the note matching, because that will say whether or not it's your ear.

That sounds like a hard thing to do.

But like I said you have to get to know your voice. When do you go flat? When you are holding a note or when you go from note to note

Usually when I go from note to note. I have a couple of recordings posted on here, you can listen to them and tell me what you think, maybe I can post another recording as well if you guys would like.

I listened to them again and I think that your muscles need to get more flexible to get the pitches accurately. Since your hearing is good and you have no problem holding notes, all you can do now is practice. Your muscles need to become more coordinated.

Yeah, seems like that is usually the solution to everything :-) I'll keep these things in mind. I know I have improved since I have started in lots of areas, its really neat. I guess they will all come together at some point.

Re: ...

Mhmm, it will all come together nice and smooth if you practice for it. Just practice slowly going from note to note for a while and see if that helps. For instance pick a tone, and then just jump or fall to another at random. Don't worry about doing long trills. Do that when you know you can handle what you're doing with just slow note to note.
