Should your soft palate be raised for singing? Some say yes, some no. Personally, from reading some of David Jones' stuff, I'd say it should, but what do you all think?

Well, Brett says no haha. But if you look at it from an anatomical standpoint, I say no too. Head voice resonates in your head, raising the soft palate narrows that passageway and makes it hard to get into head voice. I think it sounds horrible too, I'm trying it right now, it seems to make my larynx muscles and stuff tense up. I may be doing it wrong, but I say no. I'm sure Cuno will have more information than I do.

Re: ...

Yes... it needs to be raised. Raising the soft palate doesn't block off the nasal cavity. Trust me, I'm raising it as much as possible, and still slightly nasal. I still have the same ability to do whatever. I'm finding that I don't resonate in my head for head... I resonate everywhere. Same for chest. The different coordinations are based on the larnyx and folds. I find it hard to believe that my folds won't stretch to the head position if I raise my soft palate. It's illogical.

Re: ...

Musiciano/Jesse/Dante said not to manipulate the soft pallate 'manually' (I can't remember - it was a while ago). It will move by itself, don't do it.

It like trying to mess with the breathing system - let it be, let it be natural.

I wouldn't call it part of the breathing system... it's a seperator for the two cavities. When you open your throat, you're soft palate has to raise quite a bit, so to not raise it would be not open the throat. I had that problem. Led me to constriction.

Haha, no. That isn't what I meant. I was talking about the breathing system as an example.

People try to mess with it too much and they end up being messed up.

Re: ...

It depends on the sound you're aiming for... the soft palate's whereabouts is not the question, it is the balance between folds and the air pressure... I'm confused about why someone having vocal trouble would be wondering about something as tertiary as this.

It's about whether you're happy with the sounds you're making and whether they are healthy or not, not about where the soft palate is.

If you're referring to me, I didn't post this because of vocal trouble, but rather that I was curious what others thought about where the soft palate should be.

Re: ...

I agree with musiciano. The soft palate will raise or lower to different extents, depending on the sound you're going for. In some cases, raising the soft palate will be detrimental; in other cases, it is necessary. Sometimes you will feel it more raised, at other times, it will be less raised. It's all relative.

I raise mine. Only because it gives me the sound I want. I usually aim to raise it high on my higher notes.
