The "ultimate singer's dilemma" is that all the problems he or she is trying to fix are created by him or her! So it's quite literally impossible to fix your singing problems from the place you stand in. This is why awareness is so important - the idea is to SEE what you are doing that's keeping you stuck. This is why a voice teacher can be such a great help.
Tighten you fist. Tighten real hard. That's most likely what you are doing when you are singing to your body and throat... and every attempt you make to sound better all you're really doing is... you guessed it... tightening up even more. And the harder you try to loosen your grip on the whole thing, the tighter it gets.
It's important to realize that YOU ARE NOT IN CONTROL HERE! Any control you try to impose just gets in the way of what's REALLY IN CONTROL -- and believe it or not, it's NOT YOU! What's "in control" here is this awareness or lack of it. The more you lack it, the more out of control you are, the more you allow it the more "in control" you are.
Think about it, if it was up to you you'd sound great and be the best singer you can be right now. But it doesn't look like that approach is working, or does it? The truth of the matter, and any good singer will probably confirm this is that you have got to QUIT trying to be good, because the harder you try to be good the more frustrated, tense and tight you become. Any good singer can probably confirm that it takes a letting go of trying to micromanage everything. The more you let go, the more the voice shines.
So in short... YOU are what's MESSING your voice up! So YOU can't really do anything about it other than STOP TRYING TO BE GOOD. YOU HAVE TO STOP! There are no two ways about it. Either you STOP and sing well or you KEEP TRYING TO BE GOOD and stay frustrated.
It's like looking for the thief that's stealing everything from the house when the thief is yourself. You'll never find the thief, because the thief is YOU.
If you are ready to hear and understand this you will, if not, this probably won't make any sense to you. Either way -- it's fine. It's a journey. I'm just trying to save you all some time. Keep this in mind: any problem you have in singing (hint: in life too) is being created by -- you guessed it -- YOU! When you see this your entire approach changes, you let go and let God, so to speak. Feel free to dismiss all I said. I am not saying this to argue. Who am I to know anything anyway? It is YOU who decides what is true for YOU - yet the Truth remains the Truth.
