what exercises strengthen the mix and allow you to lean more into it?

Try quick, aggressive "muh muh muh" with a good amount of edge into it. See if that helps. Keep the larynx a little low as well.

getting loose.
try using breathy sounds to loosen the squeezing. the squeezing absorbs and steals most of the sound. so think breathy and cords together at the same time. it´s a paradox. but the breathy sensation and encouragement can help to loosen the grip on the throat. that grip steals strength and power. so feel get a breathy throat feel. a loose ¨let go¨ throat feel, with engaged, nicely closed vocal cords. you´ll find all the power, range and strength there. but strength in singing doesn´t mean FORCE. it means BALANCE. so it feels easy, relaxed and balanced. not forceful. think breathy, but don´t sing breathy... but if you have to sound breathy to starte to get it, do it breathy first. i am not encouraging breathiness... i´m encouranging a loose, relaxed, open, flexible, open throat. breathiness can encourage the opening of the throat. but the intention is to to end up sounding breathy. but again, USE breathiness... it can help greatly! |

musiciano, is this singer a good example of what you described?

i don't know, but i didn't "describe" anything.
i'm saying have a breathy, let go, easy, loose, open, inactive, disengaged throat and engaged, closed and active vocal cords. you can't really feel the cords! they don't have enough nerve endings, you can only feel the resonance of the sound created by them! keep in mind that to have a super loose and flexible open throat you have to have a loose tongue, neck, jaw, lips, head, abs, body... all of it. by loose i don't mean lazy and inactive, i mean flexible, moldable, pliable and ready! if you're tight and tense off the bat, you'll run into trouble... not that tightness and tension are bad. they're good! but the body has to start in neutral to use tightness and tension effectively, and then let them go once they're done. do what you can to "neutralize" and "relax" your body... so then it can use tension to your benefit! i can't listen to that singer now, but i will later and let you know what i think. |

thanks cuno. i realize that it is very easy to misunderstand and misinterpret my advice... but then again, the same has been true for sages of all time... not
that i´m a sage or i´m not a sage. i´m just saying that deep truths tend to be paradoxical. i´m not encouraging breathiness, but i am encouraging the sensation
around the throat that come with breathiness.
everything has its time and use. confused, i´m sorry i keep bugging you, but will you change your username to something like ¨ontheway¨ or ¨almostthere¨ or ¨realizer¨ or ¨understander¨ i don´t know... just a suggestion, you DON´T have to listen to me but you also don´t have to not listen to me. i just heard the singer... and yeah, if it helps you to imitate his breathiness for a while to help counter your oversqueezing tendency, the by all means. i don´t encourage you to try and be like any singer or imitate any singer except as a temporary learning device, ultimately you want to be natural, which means your aim should be to sound like you. not like anyone else... but again, imitating others can help you get there as long as you don´t get stuck. the motto for the week is simple, keep it moving! if you´re singing squeezed and tight too much, focus on being really let go and breathy for a while, then go back to squeezed and tight and then back to let go and loose... then work to find the middle... the MIDDLE is the elusive ¨balance¨ i´m always talking about. not too tight, not too loose. not too relaxed, not too tense. right in the middle. that´s the trick. but to find the middle you MUST be familiar with both EXTREMES... extremely tight and extremely loose! in my experience almost nobody gets familiar with the extremely loose extreme. this is the whole ss premise with the nays and the mums... trying to familiriaze you with the extremes. you have to get real good at both, to later drop both and sing right in the middle. get loose and breathy and become familiar with that extreme. become as familiar with that as you are with the tight extreme. ultimately, everybody ends up getting it! granted they want it bad enough. |

i don't quite get it right now, but i've been using pro singer's warmup and jesse's mix program (i dropped ss for the time being)... i think
they got some breathy airflow exercises.. ill see it how it goes after a few weeks...
i don't have the capability to change my name.. i once asked jollyjake to change my name to something else and apparently it wasn't possible.. if i do change my name to something like "almost there" or "on the way" or something, i think i would prefer "fist in front of your eye" or " my feet is on the way to your stomach" something playful no pun indented |

I guess the extreme squeeze (over-squeezing) is like constipation while the extreme loose (over-loosening) is like diarrhea. And the middle would be the nice
smooth, full, easy, balanced poo that slides out a person's bull eye's like a chocolate smoothie.

but today, i'm going to skip my vocalizing routine, i need some time to just ditch all this diarrhea and just do normal things like cleaning my room or
eating a lifeless chicken

very clever and funny stuff... all the way from the diarreah to the smoothie poo to luciano pepperoni.
and very good idea to take the day off vocalizing to do normal stuff. those breaks for chores are excellent therapies for anal retentive student singers. aka, singers that become obsessed with complicating the extremely simple act of singing. so chill out and take some time off... enjoy your cleaning! good look finding the smoothie flowing poo! how's that philosophy? |
