This post has sort of been sitting here a while, so I think I will answer it... It is normal for things to start happening around C4. That is where guys have to start coordinating differently to get into the D4, E4 and F4. "Someone told me that if I don't have trouble with the second bridge I am probably not singing right. " No offense to who told you that, but that just isn't true. If you are having trouble with any bridge, just slow down and figure out how to do it right. "Once I start to get chord closure I have no problem holding a mix up until the shift happens again around F5 or G5." I don't understand this. You have closure in mix through the first bridge from C4 up and then you don't have problems untill more than an octave later? We really do need recordings. What it sounds like you are trying to say is that you can sing in your chest voice, starting low, and then when you slide up you hit middle C and then your voice cracks or doesn't smoothly transition into head voice somehow, but once it does you are fine untill the G5 area. That is perfectly normal. It is true that you access mix somewhere in the bridge after C4, but you don't stay in mix. Almost immediatley afterwards you are in head voice unless you purposefully coordinate into mix. -David

Well, mix is something that you know about when you do it. If you slide up your range and your voice just cracks and you go from chest to head, then you don't know how to get into mix. If you smoothly transition from chest into head without cracking then you know how to get into mix. C4 is the start of the bridge different people have higher bridges, but that is an average starting point where you need to be coordinating differently.

What you describe in your last paragraph sounds like you are on the right track. We need some recordings though.

In my opinion, the difference between light mix and head voice is exactly that. Light mix is mostly head voice, but a good singer can hold onto chest voice just enough to make things sound awesome. Note that it gets harder to do the higher you go because chest coordination is for lower notes. The optimum point for light mix is F4-A4 area. Notes higher than that take alot more energy to keep in mix.

Note at the end of the clip, I had to keep a lot of pressure and volume to stay in a Chest coordination, but when I was in mix in the beginning it was not as loud as the chest at the end. Also, my first mix eperience was something that my voice locked into. That is because I was still too tight, and part of the lower tones were cut off, you will notice around 00:20-00:30 that I sort of have a hard time getting into and out of mix. Mix is a coordination of its own that you know about and consciously get into and out of.

[For the record, middle C is C4. A0 is the first note on a piano. C1 is the first C on a piano, and head voice has no portion of chest voice in it. As your voice learns to transition it will automatically introduce some head voice into the chest range. Also you can sing in chest voice and not be using your vocal folds efficiently and so some of the tone is not there (Just because you are in chest, 100% of your chest may not be used.)]
