do any of the sother gurus have some advice?

Oh sorry about that. I forgot, honestly. My apologies. I notice two things. First, the main problem is closure. You're "let go" with an air leak
in the entire new clip. Without that full closure, you're not going to reach mix. Secondly, you're trying to start off on the top and build the
compression. While I think this is the ULTIMATE way to find the right compression for most situations, it's not for a beginner who's trying to find the
compression, not build it. A way to work on both of these is that staccato edgy exercise Brett uses on CD6. Also, the nays from D3-D4 to the scale that is
B3-B4 would be a great help, too. I work on that range and try to keep the closure from the bottom to the top. You're getting it.
If you use MSN, add me and I can try to help you live.

Thank you, but what do you mean by starting at the top and building compression, top of my range?

You're right! Most certainly helps if I add it. lol. BeyondTenor@gmail.com
Starting at the top, meaning in head voice. For instance. do an octave scale to the G4 and make sure you're in a head voice. Do it a second time, and try to be in a lighter mix. Then just hit the G4 in head voice, no scale, and while sustaining it, try to transcend to a fuller (mixed) tone by adding compression and the air pressure under it. I'll demo that for you tomorrow.

No I'm not joking, I seriously thought for a couple of seconds you took one of James Kelly's clips and passed it as your own xD.

Hey dirtymuse I think this most recent clip of you doing a mix is definitely a mix. It's light but it's right. Just keep working on building pressure
underneath. You have very good chord closure from what I can hear. I say this because I hear excess air seeping through when you try to bring compression into
it. Try utilizing every bit of air to reach your desired pitch before you work a STRONG mix into it. I know in bel canto utilizing air pressure properly is
difficult.
By excess air, I don't mean that you are pushing from the diaphragm. I mean I hear that your folds sound like they are closed together so tight that they wont unzip or zip any more to allow freedom in a volume any louder than that. (Man I hope that made sense). I would suggest doing the exercise again but...relax...it seems like you want to get loud so fast that you are tensing your muscles up. Do the mix attempt again and utilize all of the air, if it gets too airy sing way way way or vay vay vay or may may may or bay bay bay. Sing those until you can do them all connected. I am no expert, and I ask josh or jake or ben to correct me, but in my diagnosis you have your mix and its very well coordinated but your folds need to learn to resist the air pressure of louder more full out chest tones. Get the little guys (your folds) used to resisting more pressure by the exercises I said. (if you have a difficult time doing those do lip rolls since they do the whole air pressure resistance thing too.) I hope this helped and I ask any of the experts to correct me on anything I said. |

Hey guys just wanted to post another attempt at it after what Jake gave me, I have not been as diligent as I used to be with SS, and it may be apparent
here....let me know where I'm going wrong, thanks guys!

You sound less constricted: That's a good thing!! Definitely a step in the right direction. Your attack is not correct however; you need to record yourself
experimenting with different sounds. Try different extremes... Try shouting like an army drill instructor... Think no head, just chest, and also, think dopey:
record that and post it up, I'm curious to see what will happen.

My reply was going to be almost exactly like Jake's XD It definitely sounds less constricted, but it still does sound a bit on the softer/weaker side.
Experiment like jake suggested! =]

Also, record yourself speaking as you normally would.

Hahah I'm listenning to the first clip, LOL at your drill Sargent voice! It literally scared me cuz it surprised me so much XD
20 PUSHUPS RIGHT NOW From what I hear, your voice already is quite dynamic, its just an issue of balance. I also think you can develop quite an awesome tone. Your vibrato didn't sound bad to me. You don't really sound too constricted in you "mix portion", and I really think your at a point where its just finding that right coordination. It's like as I hear you singing that clip, I feel like wanna hear you sing it like at full volume to see what it would sound like, because you don't seem to have the issue I did around that range which is starting to get extremely tight if I tried to incorporate any volume. I just feel like you need more closure in your chords. Would you mind recording that same mix portion, but like really loudly? so long as you aren't hurting yourself, I wana hear what that clip would sound like. Like I want to hear you belt that full power, even if thats not the way you want to convey your emotions in the song. Your mix is there, but it lacks "energy". Just being really loud I think, will provide for that energy and give an edgier sound. From there you should be able to work it down to make it easier at lower volumes =]

I'm impressed! I was expecting worse, because all I heard was bad recordings, but your speaking tone is actually very clear! Your drill sergeant imitation
was spot!
Your chest voice singing was good! The "mix" was head voice though. You need more energy! Here is what I want you to do: Go back and listen to that imitation of that drill sergeant; then take away the grittiness that makes it sound harsh, and try singing a few lines on an F4 using that same energy. Believe it or not, when you sing a big A, you are using the close to the same amount of energy you used singing your drill sergeant imitation. If it feels bad, use the dopey sound. I could give you call and help you if you want. PM me and let me know. Lets see if we can unlock your voice for you! Jake
