There is absolutely no sense of "I'm doing it" or "I'm choosing it" or "I'm controlling it." Not in my experience. There is no sense of accomplishment or anything like that either. It's more supernatural feeling.

it SEEMS to me like the truth is equated with philosophy nowadays. maybe that has something to do with the mess. maybe?

The "ultimate singer's dilemma" is that all the problems he or she is trying to fix are created by him or her! So it's quite literally impossible to fix your singing problems from the place you stand in. This is why awareness is so important - the idea is to SEE what you are doing that's keeping you stuck. This is why a voice teacher can be such a great help.
